Ivana did a lovely version of it HERE

So here's my version of it using 2 coats of Sally Hansen Shell We Dance as the base then lightly sponging on Orly Oh Cabana Boy around the cuticles. I suggest you protect the skin around your nails with tape ala water marbling or be prepared for extensive cleanup. You WILL have pink fingers! ;-)

To finish off I freehanded a french tip with Essie Good as Gold. Lemmetellya - this polish wears like IRON! I wore this mani for 5 days and still had no tip wear on the Essie metallic. Good stuff!
They have a special meaning to Amanda and I, and I have really been wanting to do another giraffe manicure. I did a freehand giraffe here. But it seems everyone and their brother have been doing a giraffe stamp with the new BM set and I didn't want to regurgitate the same design again.

So, I decided to change it up a little bit and do a girly giraffe with Orly Passion Fruit and yellow Konad stamping polish. It's subtle but I really like it!

Thank God it's Friday!

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17924785678747625685noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-88412771202224926542012-07-31T08:09:00.000-04:002012-07-31T08:09:24.541-04:00Golden hearts
Today's manicure started out with a base of one of my most favorite red polishes - Zoya Carrie Ann. It's a sparkly fire engine red and it just flows over the nail like a dream. I used two coats for the base and let it dry thoroughly before I stamped it.

I told myself I wasn't going to pick up the Essie mirrored metallics. One - because I tend to not like Essie's formula, and two - because I thought I had dupes of most of the colors in my stash. (By the way, my boyfriend says I shouldn't call it a "stash" because it's way too big. I should call it a 'hoard' instead - LOL) I saw some of this line being used to stamp with though, I changed my mind and picked up 4 of the 5 colors available. Bad me. Bad. I need to put myself on a makeup/nail polish purchase moratorium.

Anyway, my first experience stamping with Essie Good as Gold was successful and here is the result. The stamp is BM 317 from their 2012 release. Oh, and on the thumb I added some sparkle with Milani Red Sparkle One Coat Glitter. I really love this glitter, but my bottle is half gone and it's starting to thicken a little. Might be time to look for a backup bottle. Let's face it - I just love red polish!

This is my interpretation of fairy butterly wings.

I started with a 2 coats of Sally Hansen Green Tea, which is a dusty light mint color. Green Tea is a finicky polish and doesn't like to be overworked, or it can become patchy and streaky. Then I lightly sponged Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Blue Away and Orly Charged Up over the top of Green Tea and let that dry thoroughly. I then finished the design off with a black striping polish, Wet N Wild black creme and a small paintbrush; and Zoya Purity and some dotting tools. Purity is my favorite white polish because it is so opaque. I'm about half way through my bottle and had to thin it down a little today with some Nail Polish Thinner. When everything was dry I top coated with SV, because I wanted it to dry super fast so I didn't ding it. It would be a shame to do all that work and have to redo it because of a dent!

What do you think of my take on fairy wings?

So I ended up stamping over it.

And now a question I pose to our readers (if you still are actually reading). Amanda and I have been experimenting a lot with different makeup looks and are toying with the idea of starting a beauty blog. I'm in my late 40s though with partially hooded lids which might be a turnoff to some people.

On Saturday I realized I've been a failure at summer manis - I haven't used ANY neons this whole summer! So I decided - TODAY'S the day. But alas... I had my heart set on a mani with a nude polish. What was I do to?

A funky french of course! With NEON tips! The best of both worlds - nudes, and neons! Plus, this way, it wouldn't be SO obnoxiously neon that people would see me coming from 50 feet away.

I started with two coats of Essie Topless and Barefoot aka the best nude polish in my whole stash (thanks Mom!). It's not quite mannequin hands, but it's just the perfect subtle skin color. I love it, but the formula on it is atrocious (in my bottle at least..). I managed to make it work and figured it wouldn't be too big of a deal if it wasn't perfect since I'd be putting something over it.

Now - to go on my hunt for the neon polishes I wanted to use. I realize not all of these are neon per se, but I thought this combination of colors was the most flattering together. The neons are (from thumb to pinky) China Glaze Pink Voltage, China Glaze Style Wars, China Glaze Electric Pineapple, Funky Fingers 220 Volts, and Funky Fingers Riot.

I did the nude base on Saturday afternoon, then applied tape to the tips for the french on Sunday. This works better for me than waiting [im]patiently for my top coat to dry enough to do it all in one sitting -- that's how I always ruin them, so I wait a day in between. Seal with a coat of Revlon Quick Dry and you're done! Probably the easiest nail art mani I've done in a while and I actually am really digging this one!
I swear I did not realize the matchy matchy until I was outside taking the pictures! I loved the dark vampy look of the black tips against the blood red. So I did a quick mani yesterday morning with Zoya Lolly, a lovely pink matte color. I chose the matte polish because I wanted to do my nails in the morning before work and matte polish dries fast. The first coat drags a tiny, bit but everything should level out by coat #2.

As I was showing my boyfriend the color he mentioned it would be cool if you could do a french tip fauxnad (of course he didn't know that there WAS such a thing!) So at his suggestion, I added a checkerboard fauxnad tip using white konad special polish and plate M56. It took me a couple tries to get the tips straight and even then the stamp didn't transfer perfectly. But I think it looks cool.

It's just so....pretty...and sparkly...!!

You know how I feel about doing nail art after nail art after nail art. I just don't like it -- I like to have something plain(ish) between manis. So this was my solution to "plain mani" -- three coats of a flakey polish over a dark green! Most people would just pick a light pink if they were going for "plain"....

Anyway, I started with two coats of Finger Paints Scenery Greenery. It's a pretty dark forest green, but man my bottle has gotten thick :( I hate it when you open a bottle of polish after not using it for a while only to find that it's practically chunkified. I topped that with two coats of Finger Paints Twisted which...OMG. I guess I never got the full effect of this polish because I've only ever used it over light colors. But over this dark green?! Wow!

Then I just had to see what it looked like mattified because I LOVE the look of matte flakies. And yes....I may have put on a matte top coat and taken pictures of it in my car on my lunch break....

What do you guys think of my mattified flakey mani? Love it or hate it? I happen to LOVE the way this came out!

Who's ready for the weekend? I AM I AM! Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday...Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-82083865325142397472012-07-16T07:00:00.002-04:002012-07-16T07:00:13.928-04:00I-Don't-Know-What-This-Stamp-Even-Is Konad Gradient NailsHi ladies! Hope you all had a fabulous weekend. They go way too fast, don't they? :(

I wanted to try and see if I could do a more successful gradient, so this weekend I sat down and tried the Sammy technique and what do you know -- it actually worked!! I do have to say though, that I tried to do it with 3 colors at first and couldn't get it to look like an even, gradual gradient. So if anyone has any tips on that besides the usual just sponging two colors, one on top of the next method, let me know.

The two colors in the gradient are Sally Hansen Lavender Cloud and Essie Knockout Pout. I thought I got pictures of the plain gradient, but alas, I didn't. And I didn't realize until I'd already stamped and taken pictures of the final mani. Shucks.

I topped the gradient with a coat of Fairy Dust (my bottle is about as thick as Elmer's glue these days...) and stamped over with Sinful black polish and plate RA-112. I don't even KNOW what this pattern is supposed to be, so I don't know what to call these nails! Anyone have any ideas for what the pattern actually IS? Haha. Oh well, they turned out pretty well I think. Maybe I'm getting back into the groove of things!
Think I'm going to head over to Ulta today to pick up some CG On Safari polishes, so look out for some manis with those! I like how they are so very subtle and almost look like your skin is made of lace. So I wanted to try to recreate that look on my nails.

This is two coats of Sally Hansen Without a Stitch stamped with white konad special polish and plate m73, which I thought looked most like an intricate filigree type pattern that a tattoo would have. Without a Stitch can have a tendency to drag, so you will need to apply smooth coats and let them dry thoroughly in between. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out and I think it has the sublte look I was striving for.

I started with 2 coats of Orly Haley's Comet (which is a dupe for Zoya Charla and OPI Catch me in your net). On the thumb, index and middle fingers I added 2 coats of Deborah Lippman Across the Universe (which is one of my all time favorite glitter polishes). Across the Universe is a blue base with blue, green and silver hex shaped glitter. It always reminds me of mermaid scales or the mosaic bottom of a swimming pool.

Sadly, the HC had a huge chip in it by day 2 - nearly half the polish came off in one piece. And upon removal I found that this polish gave me terrible Smurf fingers, even with a basecoat. Thank goodness most of it came off during a good scrubbing with whitening toothpaste and a nail brush.

For this mani, I started with a base of Essie French Affair. I might need to repurchase this soon, I use it so often...

I then stamped over it with Konad plate m64 and a pink chrome Sally Hansen pen. The only bad thing about these pens is they give me all these little stamping wispies that I have to flatten out on my nail. I don't really know what else to call them, so I hope you know what I'm talking about. Hahah.

I made the cherries with acrylic paint and a small paintbrush. I think they turned out nicely, I only wish I had stamped with a lighter background color because I think it makes the cherries a bit difficult to see. But oh well! I'm a little out of practice, so hopefully these weekly nail nights with Mama will get me back into the routine :)

Just a brief post tonight because I'm on my way to visit the manfriend. And I am a little buzzed. Ok Bye!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-36224507831322402232012-07-12T07:58:00.001-04:002012-07-12T07:59:17.325-04:00Dino Spots!I have recently returned from a trip to Indiana where Amanda and I got to spend 5 days together including a fun pool party at a family member's house for the 4th of July. I got a fabulous haircut from my cousin, Marcia; and she was kind enough to send me a care package of some high end hair products in the mail last night. So here's a shoutout to my awesome cuz!

I picked up Zoya Trixie several weeks ago at Ulta and have been wanting to use it since then but couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with it. So as I was looking through my folder of nail stamps last night my eyes fell upon the dino spots design and I thought the contrast of black spots would look good with the silver polish.

As Amanda and I sat down to do our nails together over Skype, I highlighted a few of the spots with Zoya Charisma and Studio M neon green. I'm wondering if I should have just left the spots all black. Neons are notoriously sheer and I knew it would take more than one coat to cover the black. It's kinda cool looking though - looks like nail stickers!

Trixie went on just beautifully. Zoya rarely lets me down in the quality of their product. I used two smooth coats here then waited for it to dry before stamping with Konad special polish in black and plate BM211.
Well, Mama was in town for the week of the 4th so we were spending lots of time together. Hopefully you can't fault us for that :)

I wanted to sit down and do some nail art with some pizzazz this weekend, but OF COURSE I didn't know what color I wanted to use or what I wanted to do! So what did I do? Settle for one of my most FAVORITEST colors ever -- Zoya Jacy.

This color just makes me drool. It's vampy and berry all mixed into one and it's formula is awesomesauce and *le sigh* I just love it. Do you have it? No? Go get it. Now!

I used two coats of Jacy and topped with a coat of Revlon Quick Dry. I gotta tell you, I've given up on Seche Vite. You see, I sat down and did this UBER sparkly mani Friday night... it was a light golden pink shimmer with a few coats of Teenage Dream, and it was AWESOME. But without fail, about ten minutes after I top-coated with SV, I experienced the worst tip shrinkage (giggity) that I've ever had. So I think I'll be giving some love to the other top coats I've neglected during my love affair with SV. Sorry SV, it's been real, it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun. Peace Out.

ANYWAY! I sponged Zoya Faye on the tips for some nice sparkliezz. Then I used the little butterflies on Konad plate m78 and one of my Sally Hansen Chrome pens. Those things are AWESOME for stamping, and you can get them at the dollar store!

I finished up by adding some little microbeads with the butterflies. I think it looks kinda like a flight path! Mama also got these at the dollar store during her visit. It's a little pack that comes with 8 colors. Pretty cool! I think they look nice, but boy they sure were a biatch to get on and I doubt they'll stay on long. I'll probably end up picking them off when I get my hands stuck in my hair.

Anyway, here are the pics :)

I've wanted to do nautical nails for a long time, and when I had some free time on Sunday I sat down to do them!

I started with a base of Sally Hansen Lavender Cloud on my pinky, middle, and pointer fingers, and a base of China Glaze First Mate (how appropriate!) on my thumb and ring fingers. I put a coat of China Glaze Skyscraper on the ring fingers for a little BLING! I love Skyscraper and I think it works perfectly with this color scheme!

I freehanded the anchors with a small paintbrush and white acrylic paint and made the stripes with tinyyyy pieces of scotch tape (more on that below). Painted over the tape with First Mate and made little gold buttons with China Glaze Midnight Kiss!

The major difficulty I had with these was getting the nautical stripes to be the same width. It took me a while to cut the strips of tape and they all were varying widths. And I had some leaking under the tape, but I think I managed to paint over it pretty well! They could be a little crisper but I do still like it.

That's all for today, hope you guys have a great day!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-55471668901889721672012-06-23T10:55:00.001-04:002012-06-23T12:38:33.518-04:00China Glaze Electric Beat Chevron ManiHi ladies! Phew...what a relief that we're back up and running!

Today I have a chevron mani to show you guys! I've never done one of these before, but I saw this mani by Chalkboard Nails and decided I wanted to try it!

Guys, let me tell you. NOT as easy as Sarah makes it look. Sarah, I bow down to you, you nail goddess, because that was way more difficult than I was expecting! My nails aren't very wide, so I found it difficult to get a good, even point on the chevrons, especially because those damn Sally Hansen brushes are SO wide! It does look cute though, it just ended up making the tips of my nails very thick.

The colors I used for this are China Glaze Electric Beat, Sally Hansen Lavender Cloud, and China Glaze Make Some Noise.

Do you ladies have any fun weekend plans? They're having a festival down at the park in my neighborhood this weekend so the bf and I are going to go to that :)

Hope you have a great weekend!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-24288795951743197422012-06-20T08:13:00.000-04:002012-06-20T08:13:11.155-04:00Welcome Summer! This is a manicure I did over the weekend because I wanted something with a little ZING to really shine in the sunlight. We haven't had many summery days here in Boston - I actually find myself missing those 90 degree days from Indiana! Oh - and it's supposed to be 97F today here in Boston. Wish I could go to the beach instead of work!!

I started with a base of Zoya Charisma, which is a beautiful neon magenta color. The pictures make it look pink, but it's actually a deeper red violet color. Charisma is lovely on her own and will be featured again in an upcoming mani I have planned. Over the top of Charisma I applied 2 full coats of Orly Bubbly Bombshell.

OBB is a clear base packed full of small magenta colored glitter. Take her out into the sunshine and she burns your retinas with her glow! The depth of this glitter is really unique too. Bubbly Bombshell has been sitting in my stash unused for months and I'm glad I finally took her for a test drive!

Malware Warning is Gone :)Just a heads up :)

So for those of you wondering - what happened? Basically a site on our blogroll was hacked with malicious content; and because we had a link to that site on our blog, Google flagged our blog as potentially dangerous. The owner of the site that was hacked had no idea she was hacked and is currently working on repairing her site. So if you happened to click on a link to Kiss My Acetone in the last few days you may want to run a virus and malware scan. Hopefully Dori can fix her site and get it up and running again soon so we can enjoy her manis too - please send a lot of good vibes out there to her. Dori - we love ya!

Unfortunately, we had to delete our entire blogroll to get our clean bill of health back as well as all the java scripts we had in our sidebar.

So we'd like to put a request out there that if your site was on our blogroll please email us at mad.manis@yahoo(dot)com with your URL so we can rebuild it. (I've modified the email addy there to prevent us getting innundated with spam).

Oh, and - hackers suck.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-54981611222545959062012-06-18T17:48:00.001-04:002012-06-18T18:27:39.084-04:00Short updateIt has come to our attention that some of you using Firefox have been getting a virus warning when visiting our site. Upon investigation we have found that a site on our blog roll was flagged as having malicious content. Most likely this is a false positive to some bit of code on blogger or someone attached a malicious code to that website. We have removed the website from our blogroll till the problem is sorted out so you should not be seeing the warning anymore. If you do continue to have virus warnings viewing our site please let us know.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17924785678747625685noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-36727227342111203172012-06-18T07:00:00.000-04:002012-06-18T07:00:00.880-04:00Revlon Facets of Fuchsia Funky FrenchHi all.

Happy....Monday?

Guess what? I FINALLY have a mani to show you guys that I'm actually relatively happy with!! I took off that Zoya funky french about an hour after posting it because the layers of polish started to seriously bug me. You know how when you have like 8 coats of crap on your nails and they just feel thick and gross and gnarly? That was my dilemma. So I removed it all about 5 minutes before I made an hour drive to visit boyfriend for the weekend, and was stuck with nakey nails.

Nekkie nails are not fun for me. I hate the texture of them. They always feel like they're going to break at any second. That's why I like to always have them polished - they just FEEL stronger. So after D left for work on Saturday night, the very first thing I did was sit down and do my nails (yes.... I may have brought a bottle of polish and top coat with me....). Mind you, this is a house full of men. So I sat down on my knees and polished my nails on his end table. No clean up, no cuticle cream....nothing. But I sat down, and put on two coats of China Glaze Gothic Lolita. And it was grand - I didn't feel like every nail was going to splinter into a thousand pieces anymore! But.... it was just so....BORING!

So yesterday, after we celebrated Father's Day, I sat down and did another funky french. For this one, I cut pieces of tape on a diagonal and placed them in the center of my nails. I used a coat of Revlon Facets of Fuchsia over top of the tape, and boy do I love the way these two colors go together!

Can you believe I've never used this bottle of Revlon Facets of Fuchsia?! I mean....ever. I've used Mom's bottle of DL Bad Romance, but never used this one. What a mistake that was, because I love this! I thought it needed a little more pizazz, so I added some silver lines with a striper brush. But in retrospect, I wish I'd just left them off. It was much sharper before I put the striping polish on, and the Kiss striper I used was so old and think and glumpy that I couldn't get a crisp line. Le sigh. I still like the way it looks :)
Hope you all had a fantastic weekend, back to the grind today :(Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-15409621608814182192012-06-15T20:57:00.000-04:002012-06-15T20:57:09.653-04:00Zoya Sooki Funky FrenchHi all. I'm alive!

Today I have a funky french for you guys. Since I rarely have the time (or motivation) to do my nails these days, I've been building on plain color manis as a refresher so I don't have to remove the entire mani.

This started with two coats of Zoya Sooki (any True Blood fans here?) which is the SEXIEST red in all the land. I love it. It's just like...UNF!! Then I taped on a diagonal and used Zoya Kelly to make a funky french. I stamped with a Sally Hansen chrome pen and Konad plate m73. I usually have problems with this particular plate design but it worked pretty well with the Chrome pen.

Sorry for the short post, I hope you all are well! Until next time, see ya :)Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11737030409204896605noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1787705833327564948.post-89262027689022485522012-06-15T09:02:00.000-04:002012-06-15T09:02:10.586-04:00Minx nails - my first attemptMinx nails are a type of nail applique previously only available through a professional salon or certified technician that are now being marketed to Ulta for home use.

If you've ever used Sally Hansen nail strips, Minx nails are very similar to those.

The package comes with 16 nail strips and 12 pedicure strips. I wish there were more than 8 sizes to choose from for my nails. Some were too small and the next size up too large. The directions say to trim down the larger size to fit, but - these things are sticky! That would have been a hot mess trying to trim a sticky nail applique and have it look neat.

So anyway you are supposed to "Rub the Minx to warm". After trial and error, I found that gently warming the strip with a blow dryer was much easier (and more successful) than trying to warm it by rubbing. As the applique heats, it becomes more flexible (and you're gonna need that).

After you've heated the strip you peel it off the plastic and apply it to a clean nail that you have prepped by removing polish and swabbing with alcohol to remove oils. I recommend smoothing it down the center of your nail first then moving out to the cuticle edges. I had to lift and smoothe back down several times and still ended up with some small wrinkles on my non picture hand (which I did first). Definately a learning curve to application on these. After you have the applique where you want it you take a fine grade nail file and file in a downward motion on the free edge of your nail to remove the excess. Any little imperfections can be cleaned up with small scissors or clippers and smoothed back down.

In retrospect I wish I'd picked a pattern for my first attempt rather than a solid color (and a foil at that!) because I think patterns will be more forgiving of tiny wrinkles and imperfections.

Have any of you tried Minx nails and what is your experience with them?

While at Ulta this week I picked up the lovely Zoya Charla and wanted to do some sort of nail art with it. Since the color (aquamarine shimmer with flashes of green and gold) reminded me of a mermaid's tail I decided to go with a mermaid theme.

This is actually 3 coats of Charla. I could have done 2 but due to some user error, I needed a third to even things out. :) I let it dry thoroughly then stamped over it with Konad Blue and Red Angel plate RA-111 in the fish scale pattern.

It came out a little more subtle than I expected, but I really like it! When the sunlight hits Charla she really shines like POW! look at me! The pictures lean a little more blue than Charla does in real life, but alas - I am heading out the door for work and no time to color correct them..

And here's the lovely Charla on her own. She actually has a little more green and gold sheen than the picture represents. It just doesn't capture how beautiful this polish is.
